Robotic In School

Sabah Science Secondary School starts to implement Robotic In School program officially this year (2009). This programme is being introduced by the Principal Tn. Hj. Zaini bin Zair in order to create a field of specialization for the school. The mission of the school is ‘ To achieve World Class standard in Education’. In order to achieve the mission of the school, the Robotic In School Programme has been launched. This is an important step to acknowledge the role of robotics in the world of science and technology today. SMESH aims to produce future generation who is good in robotic to face the global challenge.

The tactical plan for the Robotic In School Program consists of two important strategies:

a. Robotic in Education Programme
b. Robotic Club

Robotic In Education is a program to recommend Robotics as a subject into the school curriculum. The target for the initial robotics curriculum is the Form 1 students (13 years old). The robotics syllabus for the Form 1 students consists of 4 topics.

Robotic Syllabus
No. Activity
1. Basic construction engineering with LEGO
2. Geomery Robot
3. Clear the Table
4. Rescue the Chicken
In the first phase of the implementation, arrangement has been made with the Relief Teacher in the school to send F1 students for Robotic class when the Robotic Time table is met. Form 1 students only need to enter the robotic laboratory 4 times throughout the year. The basic skills student will acquire from the robotic syllabus are

1. Method to construct stiff robot or structure
2. Method to steer a two wheels robot around
3. Method to handle light sensor, sound sensor and touch sensor
4. Programming language ( Robolab or Mindstorm)
5. Cooperation

The robotic syllabus is taught during relief classes for the Form 1 students on Tuesday and Wednesday 12.10pm to 1.20pm depends on the availability. The schedule is arranged by the teacher in charge of Relief Class.

Robotic Club is form to introduce robotic in the co-curriculum activities. Robotics Club is responsible to train students for robotic competition, innovation projects and recreation projects.

Future Planning
1. The school will allocate a bigger room as robotic laboratory.
2. The school will introduce robotics syllabus to the Form 2, 3, 4 and 5 students.
3. The school will add more facilities to the robotic laboratory ( computer, LCD, robots).
4. The school will create a showroom for robot.
5. Robotic training centre for surrounding school.
